A Dime a Dozen

A Dime a Dozen
by: Nikki Grimes
Grimes, N. (1998). A dime a dozen. New York: Dial Books for Young Readers.

This book is a collection of poems that Nikki Grimes wrote speaking to the themes of growing up.  Something that becomes relate-able to almost any reader which is why it has had such an effect on the public.  Students can connect to the pursuit of happiness and the search for the correct destiny.

As the title shows, this book would focus a lot on figurative language.  I liked the use of idioms used throughout, which could transform into a minilesson.  Furthermore, the themes of self-discovery are very appropriate for this age group and could stimulate self-reflection exercises.
