Love That Dog

Creech, S. (2001). Love that dog. New York: HarperCollins.
This book focuses on Jack, his dog, his teacher, and his fondness for speaking lack of words. However, things change when his teacher feeds him with inspiration, and Jack stumbles upon a poem that inspires him to write in a similar fashion about his dog. This story is inspiring, heartfelt, and encompasses all that teacher's should strive to do: inspire and encourage his or her students.
I remember reading this book in grade school and thinking it was so cool because it was a completely different style. I, however, did not get much out of the book because it was such a fast read. I would use this book to model writing about something that they love, and read this together as a class. This would also encourage fluency because the wording and pace of reading a poem is very different than that of prose.
